Police officer and 911 dispatcher set to open Hobart fitness facility 'to cater to everybody'

Published June 06, 2022

HOBART – A 10-year dream will become a reality Sunday when CrossFire Fitness opens its doors at 3879 Packerland Drive in Hobart.

Angel Van Noie and Jenny Conley, co-owners, say it will be a gym unlike any other in the area.

“We are the first to offer a well-rounded fitness facility with reasonable membership pricing that is not a large gym,” Van Noie said. “We offer a large variety of group fitness classes along with personal training, nutritional services, access to the gym when classes aren’t taking place, and intermittent kids’ classes — all while striving to stay a small community- and family-based facility.”

Van Noie, a police officer, says facilities that specialize in one type of fitness can be limiting. Having been in the fitness industry for more than 16 years, she has numerous certifications and experience in strength training, HIIT, group fitness, dance, yoga, Pilates and self-defense. That experience has convinced her that there is no one size fits all.

“The type of training depends on the individual," Van Noie said. "Everybody’s body responds differently and has its own strengths. We want to cater to everybody; that’s the reason for offering a large variety of classes.”

While she will teach some of the classes, Conley’s role will be more behind the scenes working with memberships and orientations. The commonality between the partners will be their enthusiasm and love of fitness. Conley, a 911 dispatcher, began her fitness journey 10 years ago. After taking a Zumba class, she was hooked and hired a personal trainer who introduced her to other areas of fitness.

Although both have been busy working while planning the business, fitness has remained a priority. Too many people, they say, are so busy focusing on their jobs and family that they don’t focus on themselves. Health, including fitness and nutrition, are vital to overall well-being, even if it’s hard to get started.

“We both remember what it’s like starting a fitness routine when you know very little or nothing about fitness," Van Noie said. "We want everyone to feel comfortable regardless of where they are in their fitness journey. Our role will be to guide our members in whatever way we can to achieve their fitness goals.”

Those goals, she noted, could include losing weight, gaining strength, maintaining a current fitness level, or just the good feeling that comes from being active.

“Everyone who comes to the gym will be coming to be a better version of themselves, and we share that common goal,” Van Noie said.

The gym has been designed with that in mind. Throughout the planning process, Van Noie and Conley said everything has been falling into place.

They received mentoring from Ryan Kauth, Green Bay SCORE volunteer, and he provided direction. Another excellent source turned out to be their landlords, Don and Pam Niespodzany, owners of D & D Landscaping.

“They offered space to rent in part of their building,” Van Noie said. “We knew we wanted to stay in the Hobart/ Lawrence/ West De Pere area but it was difficult to find a place to rent. This was an opportunity that we couldn’t pass up so we got started right away.”

The gym includes an array of equipment and shower facilities. They say it is a comfortable place to work out.

“We know how intimidating it can be to walk into a gym for the first time. Everyone who has ever worked out has been in that position. It is our goal to make getting in the door the hardest part and everything else from there is on us and our incredible team of coaches,” Van Noie said.

Their membership costs are based on the financial analysis of what they needed to charge in order to make the numbers work. The rates, they said, are affordable and they aren’t looking to get rich. Six-month and annual contracts are offered (www.crossfirefit.com) and allow full access to the gym and classes.

Class schedules will be posted on their Facebook page, and Conley will use her marketing expertise to engage members and increase the number of followers. Their first followers have been other fitness enthusiasts, but they are confident that will build through word-of-mouth recommendations. They want the gym to feel like a community.

“Our gym is about an experience and a lifestyle. It isn’t about a fad class or a fad diet that might be popular for a little bit and then phase out," Van Noie said. "It’s about giving our clients the tools they need to be successful in their fitness journey. We have knowledgeable and motivating staff to lead the clients through any class they take.”

Van Noie and Conley are excited to be part of each person’s journey. Ten years is a long time to dream of a business, and they say it’s been incredible to see their ideas come to fruition. For others with a similar passion, Van Noie has advice.

“The time will never be ideal,” she said. “There will always be hurdles and the perfect time to start doesn’t exist. If it’s something you are truly passionate about, it’s worth the risk.”
